What changes.
A useful prompt makes the job explicit: what needs to be done, which information can be used, what must be left alone, and what a usable answer looks like. It gives the reviewer something concrete to assess.
Separate the business rules from the incoming request. A customer’s message is material to interpret; it should not override the rules that govern the task. Ask the model to say when information is missing instead of filling gaps with plausible details.
A better prompt can improve consistency, but it does not guarantee correctness. Test representative inputs, including incomplete and confusing requests. Keep human review where an incorrect output would affect a customer or a business decision.
A prompt is a small process document.
A practical example.
For a fictional inquiry summary, the instructions ask for the requested service, stated timing, unanswered questions, and suggested next action. If the customer did not mention timing, the output says “Not provided” instead of inventing urgency.
- Task + context

Check the handoff.
- The task has one clear purpose.
- Input information is separate from the operating rules.
- Missing details have an explicit handling rule.
- Examples show both good output and difficult inputs.
- A reviewer can compare the output against the original request.
What to avoid.
- Asking vague questions.
- No output format.
- No examples.
- No business context.
- Using the same prompt for every workflow.
